Elephants are a fav circus animal for my kids!  I've always wanted to send them to school with those cute and encouraging lunchbox notes. With school starting in a week I decided to give it a try. I also wanted to try water coloring since so many crafters have been doing it for a while. Both notes are flat, double-sided notes made from one sheet of watercolor paper. I started out on the smooth side and left the textured side for the sentiment and/or hand written note.

I didn't want these notes to be perfect or too fancy, just a quick show of affection for my kiddos. I started by cutting the watercolor paper to approximately the size of ATC cards, stamping in memento tuxedo black ink and wetting the surface with a water brush. I colored directly on the wet watercolor paper with Tim Holtz distress markers and blended with the water brush. On the back I scribbled with markers on the wet surface and blended for a tie die type of background.

For the pink elephant I wanted a lighter color so I wet the surface but unscrewed the water reservoir so no more water could be released. I scrubbed with the markers on my Tim Holtz grid blocks and picked up the color with the water brush. I think I like this method better because it gave me more control. I opted to leave the back more open for a hand written sentiment matching what my child might be experiencing at the time.
