2 Peas in a Pod - Diaper Cake and Cupcake Pics

Baby showers are my best business these days! I love it! I crafted a diaper cake and matching cupcake picks for a shower for twins next month. The theme is 2 peas in a pod. I love this color palate for babies. Don't you? Believe it or not, I have had people think my diaper cakes are real cakes, LOL. When I am carrying it, they always offer to help and look really worried that it might fall over. I guess that means they look as good as a real one. I'm smiling from ear to ear! 

This three tiered diaper cake is accented with ribbon from hobby lobby and a topper that matched the cupcake pics.

Cupcake Picks

I designed these picks with my Cricut Imagine machine. For some reason it would not cut the small peas icons after it expertly printed 30 images. I had to fussy cut each one out. I was HOT!!! But the Elizabeth crafts spring action fussy cut scissors really made the process painless. I have tendinitis in my hands and can't usually do all that maneuvering with scissors. I need to call Provo Craft to get the advanced calibration directions.

Designer's Challenge: Aviator Bear Diaper Cake

 

Here's the diaper cake I made to match the aviator bear baby shower theme I recently was hired to create. I also made matching wooden letters. For more info on those and how I uniquely created the bear click here. 

 

It was a challenge to create a fun look for the diaper cake without all the bows, frills, flowers etc I usually use for girl themed diaper cakes. I was inspired by the Close to my Heart Burlap ribbon and thought it would bring a manly charm to this diaper cake.

Pink Teddy Bear Diaper Cake

I am so into making diaper cakes these days! A close friend is expecting and I thought it would be nice to try the kind of diaper cake with the blanket in the middle with a teddy bear holding it at the top. I found the diapers, blanket and the bear at Target. The bear's tail can be pulled and it plays a lullaby. The diaper cake kit including the items for the baby - a headband (which is on the bear), skirt (tucked into the top layer of the cake) and flower clips at the bottom and top of the cake. I had the ribbon in my stash from Micheal's crafts. I love love LOVE how it came out and the mom and dad to be did too!

For the video I used to create the diaper cake in such a professional even looking way (without rubber bands or tape or glue) so that it can easily be taken apart and used check out my recent post detailing the last diaper cake I made.

I like to package the diaper cakes in 30x30 shrink wrap bags on a cake board both from hobby lobby.

 

Stay tuned in November for pictures of the layouts I made in class at CKC Lancaster and how I personalized them to create a baby's first year instant scrapbook for this family! It was a big, big hit! A treasured keepsake for years to come!

Hot Pink Zebra Print Diaper Cake... OH MY!!!

Since I have been more organized, I have been able to craft for hire (like I'm supposed to be... LOL). My first client in a while was a friend from high school that I reconnected with on Facebook. You've gotta love it! She threw a baby shower for her sister with a hot pink zebra print theme and hired me to completed several decor items for the blessed event. The first I will share with you is the 3-tier diaper cake I made. This is the second one I've ever made! Check out my first for comparison if you'd like. While both are special to me, I am especially fond of this one because it's girlie and much more functional. While my first cake was for decoration, this one was to be used on the baby so I had to discover a different way to create it. I love how it came out! Don't you?????

Here's another view of the diaper cake all dressed up and ready to go! I love that is has a headband, tulle skirt and 2 flowers (that can be used with or without the headband and skirt) for the baby.

 

I went to hobby lobby for the supplies on many different days. On this one day in particular, I happened upon a hot pink and zebra print diaper cake kit! I couldn't believe my eyes!!!

 

 

I was planning on making the same sorts of things (actually had the supplies in my basket) to adorn the cake. This was a much better option and now I can make it in any color after studying how easily it is made. There is tulle tied in knots on the bottom row of the adult-sized stretchy headband all the way around to make the skirt.

 

At target I found the perfect adornment for the top! A darling pair of baby booties! Even if these cannot be used (my kids had awesomely long feet at birth and cute newborn booties didn't fit) they are a great keepsake for the baby.

Ok, let's get down to construction! It took 100 diapers to make the cake. I learned how to construct this diaper cake online by watching a slideshow set to music by Diaper Cakes by Becca. (Note: this link has broken before so google it if it doesn't work.) It was a lifesaver! I plan to make all my diaper cakes like this because the rolled ones look less uniform and less professional in my eyes. Shout out to Becca for a great tutorial that anyone can follow. Here is my bottom layer and the hair conditioner tub (seen just behind the diaper cake) that I put in the middle to hold the shape as I layered the diapers.

I wanted it to be well supported (a fact I missed on my last cake) so I bought real 14" cake board from hobby lobby. I made the first layer of the cake first to make sure I had bought the right sized cake board. Then I covered the board in hot pink cardstock by paper studio.

In order to make sure there was nothing stuck to the diapers, Becca suggests using scrap ribbon to tightly secure the layers of the cake and then sticking the decorative ribbon to the scrap ribbon - brilliant!!

Here's the cake board covered with cardstock and all three layers adorned with almost 3 yards of flocked ribbon by ribbon boutique. I decided to carry through the pink by using my E2 Cricut Expression to cut circles at 10.5"  8" and 6" from the basic shapes that came loaded in the machine.

To complete the look I put the cake in a shrink wrap bag sized 30x30 to make sure no smells from cooking etc set into the diapers before delivery to the client. From what I hear, the shower divine and my crafts were a huge hit. I'm smiling from ear to ear.

Diaper Cake

On the day of my sister-in-law's babyshower, my 5 year old daughter and I made this diaper cake. I watched several youtube videos on the subject and got to work. We used a half case of size 3 huggies little movers diapers. My son had grown out of them and I wasn't sure what to do with them.

My daughter rolled all of the diapers and I tied gift curling ribbon around the middle. The trick is to roll the diaper tight and to hide the picture and name of the diapers. The curling ribbon used to hold the diapers is concealed under the brown ribbon. Rubber bands work well too.

The base of the cake has an inside layer of a few diapers that are lined up and tied with the curling ribbon. Then an outer layer was created around that. The next layer has one fewer layer and the top layer only have one set of diapers. I used my cricut imagine to print and cut the cake topper. I used the nursery tails cartridge and I printed a mirror image so that it would match up on both sides. I sandwiched a popsicle stick inbetween and stuck it into the one diaper that makes the top tier of the cake.

To finish it off, I wrapped the cake in ribbon and printed two each of the animals to match the thank you cards I created. Inking the edges helps the images to stand out. I made the larger animals for the bottom of the cake and made the smaller ones for higher up on the cake.

For the base, I used 3 scallop circles layered to make a big enough space to support the entire cake. It came out beautifully for a first try. Everyone thought it was a real cake and kept asking if I needed help carrying it at the shower.
